I like iLike for music.
iLike.com is a new music discovery and sharing site, similar to last.fm. It’s clean and simple, with all the usual features you would expect from a service like this. The main caveat is that it only works with iTunes. Basically it allows me to:
- Share my taste in music.
- See what my friends are listening to at the moment.
- Find other music that I will like.

What’s the difference between this and last.fm? (Trying to work out which one to use.)
Well I used last.fm a while a ago and was a bit nonplussed, though I find it hard to put my finger on exactly what it was. iLike is still very new so it’s a little unfair to judge it when it still isn’t finished. But as it stands now, here are some advantages of both:
last.fm:
The main advantage of last.fm is the radio stream of suggested music. iLike does suggestions but you have to play each track individually.
It is old and more complete so less likely to go bust or change direction.
Although it’s official software is rather bloated there are many third party plugins for almost every media player available.
iLike:
Perfect integration with iTunes and iTunes store. last.fm official software is a stand alone app, but iLike is an iTunes plugin.
…Though that mean if you don’t use iTunes you will not get much out of iLike.
The whole experience is cleaner, simpler and less bloated.
It’s worth noting that this is a three horse race: http://www.pandora.com/ has a unique feature of being able to suggest music to you based on the characterises of what you have listened to. They call it The Music Genome Project and it all looks very clever. Last.fm and iLike suggest music by based app-on other users listening habits.
Anyway, there is no clear winner here. Maybe play with both of them for a while and see which one sticks.
